Both have longtime ties to the office, serving as deputy coroners, and both have r¬¬sum¬¬s that should appeal to the voters.In the end, though, we are recommending Charles Trimble for the Aug. 19 Republican primary. What set him apart for us was the sense that he would best care for families of the deceased. He presented a kind, caring and courteous demeanor that Mr. Sargent seemed to lack.For example, when talking about the role of the coroner, Mr. Trimble said it is essential to "be sensitive to the religious and cultural differences of families ... be sensitive to their needs." No doubt, others in this race feel this way, but it was Mr. Trimble who best put it into words. He deserves credit for that.Also running in the race are Justin Brown, Sheldon Campbell, Jason Enstad, Mitch Maxwell and Alvin Willis.Like most of the candidates in this race, Mr. Trimble said he appreciates the efforts of recently resigned Coroner Marty Luna, who the candidate said advanced the office by "leaps and bounds." But Mr. Trimble hopes to improve on that by computerizing the office, digitizing records and getting it into real-time linkage with the Cheyenne Police and Laramie County Sheriff's Department via the 911 Center.Mr. Trimble also would like, somewhere down the road, to see Laramie County get its own pathologist (all autopsies now are handled in Fort Collins, Colorado). While a pathologist would be expensive, Mr. Trimble suggests taking a regional approach with several counties sharing that person's expertise.On the political side of things, Mr. Trimble said it might be better to have a board appoint the coroner rather than elect him or her. He explained that would be one way to make certain that the county coroner has the skills needed to do the tasks required by the position.Ron Sargent is the most experienced candidate in the race. He currently is serving as acting coroner, and he has done that before, when Bill Ryan left. He also has more than 42 years of public service that include a wide range of experience.But the candidate came off as condescending and distant in his interview with the WTE Editorial Board. That made us wonder how Mr. Sargent works with grieving families, and it was this that sold us on Mr. Trimble.In terms of possible changes in the office, Mr. Sargent points to the need for a full-time deputy to assist the coroner, and he also would like to see the county move to a forensic pathologist at some time in the future. He did differ with Mr. Trimble on the issue of choosing a coroner: Mr. Sargent supports electing the position, saying, "It's working now; it's not broken."Also in the race are:- Justin Brown - Mr. Brown is an emergency medical tech with American Medical Response, the local ambulance service. He said this would put broader experience in the office if he was elected. He has had brief supervisory experience but has not handled a departmental budget. And Mr. Brown's r¬¬sum¬¬ includes no investigatory work, which is essential for the coroner, who is required to determine cause of death.Like Mr. Sargent, Mr. Brown also would like to see a deputy added to the staff. And he agrees a pathologist would be good to have, though he added that person would have to be shared regionally, perhaps even with parts of other states, to cover the costs. He said he favors an elected coroner to "let people know who you are."- Sheldon Campbell - A long-time private investigator here, Mr. Campbell ran for coroner in 1990 and won the Republican primary before losing in the general election. He points to investigative experience as his key asset, though he notes he also has served in supervisory roles and has done budgets as a business owner.The candidate says he would like to see the office become self-supporting, using Laramie County, once it has hired its own pathologist, like a funnel to channel other counties' cases through here. He also thinks the office's salary ( 75,000) is too high and would like to see it reduced and the money used elsewhere in the budget.Mr. Campbell also would like the office to be more open, helping the public to better know what a coroner does and perhaps playing a role in such issues as combating drunken driving. He favors an elected, rather than appointed, coroner.One note of concern about Mr. Campbell: He made a number of charges about missing documents and the like at the office while admitting he had spent no time looking into the issues. That always raises a red flag with us, but especially so in this case, where the candidate certainly has the investigatory skills to check things out.- Jason Enstad - Mr. Enstad works as director of nursing at the Laramie County jail. He says his medical expertise would benefit the coroner's office, calling it "priceless." He also has budgetary and supervisory experience and has worked with grieving families related to medical events.On the other hand, Mr. Enstad has spent no time in the field on investigations, but adds that, "I do assess patients every day." He says that requires him to ask questions and observe.On issues, the candidate says the office's records should be digitized to provide real-time access. He also likes the idea of an appointed coroner, saying that would better assure the official has proper qualifications and work experience.- Mitch Maxwell - Having served 23 years in law enforcement, Mr. Maxwell is touting his investigatory skills, saying, "I know where to look." He has worked for both the Laramie County Sheriff's Department andthe Cheyenne Police. And he has experience not only in the field but also as a supervisor, handling personnel and budgets and working with the City Council when needed.Mr. Maxwell also supports digitizing the office's records, and he would like to see it develop support systems for families of victims who have no one else to turn to. He said he would work with churches and other agencies to make that happen.The candidate said he would like to see the coroner's office put together a joint powers agreement with neighboring counties so they could work together should there be a catastrophic event.He supports an elected coroner and calls hiring a forensic pathologist "a waste of money" due to Wyoming's small population.- Alvin Willis - A safety engineer, Mr. Willis says his job investigating occupational incidents would serve him well as coroner. He also has supervisory and budgeting experience, having run safety departments for companies.But Mr. Willis was perhaps the least informed among the candidates about the Laramie County coroner's position, saying "I don't know how the office is doing." He has not looked at the budget and has no plans for how he might improve operations.He is not in favor of hiring a forensic pathologist and opposes an appointed coroner, saying that "removes the public from the process."
