According to a study published last year in American Journal of Medicine, at least 15 million American children and adults are in a state of chronic medical or emergency illness each year due to an untreated virus called HIV.
With an estimated 9.4 million Americans living with HIV, it is estimated at least 18.8 percent of the American population are infected. HIV infection affects more than 60 percent of newly infected patients.
In 2013, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the Affordable Care Act, a series of steps to end the lack of access to HIV testing and treatment. The ACA will provide treatment coverage for $8 billion over three years.
This plan provides a tax credit to the states. The program would cover all costs and it would cover "the following things as part of the cost of providing health coverage for employees (including those on Medicare):
1. Penalties or other sanctions
2. Health care costs
3. Provisions that may result in cost sharing on federal insurance plans (such as co-payments)
4. Other benefits for Medicaid enrollees
5. Disclosures about HIV
It is estimated that 10 percent of the US population has HIV, and about 10 percent of the US population are infected.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) estimates that one in five young children is living with a significant mental illness in their lifetime. A national survey conducted by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (NACE) of over 11,000 American adults found that one in 13 American adults and almost one in twenty teenagers are living in mental health isolation at some point during their lives.
